Math
- Addition and subtraction facts should be mastered upon entering fourth grade. If your child needs more time, please practice at home.
- Students will work towards mastery of multiplication and division facts. “Practice facts” will be your child’s daily math homework. Begin the year by practicing multiplication facts and move to division when multiplication is mastered.
- We will cover many topics in 4th grade. Your child can access online math games that reinforce these concepts and tutorial videos at home through the Everyday Math website. Each child will be given log-in information.
- Reading time will consist of a whole group reading time when we focus on comprehension strategies and small group time when we focus on fluency and differentiated instruction.
- “Read 15 minutes” will be your child’s daily reading homework. If at all possible, have them read aloud to someone who can make sure they are reading the correct words and ask them comprehension questions about the text when finished.
- The word work portion of our day will focus on grammar and morphology (the study of how words are formed), including Greek and Latin bases. This will help students develop strategies for decoding unknown vocabulary words and improve spelling skills. Quizzes are given at the end of each unit. The newsletter will let you know when quizzes are scheduled.
- Students will compose narrative, informative, and opinion writing pieces throughout the year. We will publish these using Google documents and slides. Encourage your child to share them with you!
- We will learn about the history of Illinois in Social Studies. Study guides will be at the end of our unit packets.
- We will complete mysteries covering a variety of topics in Science. There will be packets and study guides to help students prepare for quizzes and tests.
